The Artist
My name is Rebecca Bigg and I make Glass Beads.
Lampworking is the balm that sooths my creative soul.
Beaded Jewellery started it. My never-ending hunt for those unique and unusual materials I incorporated into my Jewellery designs led me to Artisan Lampwork. The concept of being able to make my own glass beads was completely alien, but it felt right - and it took me from hobby to art.
Purposefully, I see my finished piece, and then pull it apart. This gives me the materials I need. Working from back to front, inside to out, I create my miniature works of art and re-assemble them on the physical plane to create a piece of jewellery that will soothe another's soul and last for generations.
Whimsically, my mood determines the colour, the glass demands the shape. Constantly giving and taking with this medium has opened the doors to methods and techniques that are now a style I can call my own.
Being a self taught artist allows me to work outside the barriers some may build as a result of being taught another's method, another's technique, another's rules. My hands know my method, my soul speaks my technique and I know no rules but those of my own limitations.
True to the aspects of Female, my art speaks in volumes, demanding, angry and forthright. Mellow, delicate and acquiescent. Fun, bold and vibrant. My art speaks me.
I have been designing beaded jewellery for over 6 years and began incorporating my lampwork beads into my pieces 3 years ago.
My husband & I are originally from North East Victoria and moved to Perth in January 2006 for a 'change' as we called it. We have now built our second home in South Guildford and have settled in wonderfully!
